Lisa

Personal Background

Lisa, a 55-year-old school teacher has been dieting for two years and lost 75 pounds, but stagnated and was unable to continue to lose more. Two years earlier, Lisa’s doctor expressed her concerns with Lisa’s obesity. Nearly 100 pounds overweight and with a family medical history of diabetes, she took the counsel seriously and changed her lifestyle. Lisa lost 75 pounds on her own and wanted to lose the final 30 pounds to put her in her healthy range according to her doctor. She was having considerable difficulty losing the additional weight, which seemed much harder than the 75 pounds she already lost. Adding to Lisa’s motivation was the expecting of her first grandchild, and Lisa wanted to enjoy a long and healthy life with her growing family.

Prescribed Program

Lisa met with a Phase IV Registered Dietitian, an Exercise Physiologist and Performance Specialist to coordinate a plan to accomplish her goals. After an in-depth review of her history, including a questionnaire, interview, and medical review, an action plan was determined and a program designed. The program was customized to provide a complete solution to meet Lisa's physical needs and allow for her demanding work schedule.

Helping in the process was how motivated Lisa was. She had clearly defined goals, but needed a better understanding of how the body responds to food and exercise. The Phase IV team was able to lay out a specific plan to meet her goals.

  • BLOOD LACTATE TESTING & HEART RATE TRAINING: Working with an Exercise Physiologist, Lisa was given a prescription a BLT for walking to determine her ideal training zones.
  • FORM (included with STRUCTURE): We assessed Lisa from head-to-toe. The Physical Therapist working with Lisa on the assessment analyzed her current structural strengths, weaknesses, imbalances, and looked for potential susceptibilities to future injuries given the need for Lisa to add an exercise component to her lifestyle, in addition to a health diet.
  • STRUCTURE™ - Injury Prevention Program: The information garnered from the structural exam was utilized to design a personalized flexibility and strength program. The program was designed to be as simple as possible and able to be performed at home. Lisa was prescribed the most essential exercises necessary to achieve functional stability of the pelvis, core, and shoulder girdle. This would lead to efficiency and injury prevention for Lisa’s walking and general health.
  • SPEED LAB: Video & computer assisted walk/run stride analysis & coaching session helped to assess Lisa’s stride frequency, knee rise, foot and leg position at foot strike, and upper body carriage to determine efficient biomechanics. Her Physical Therapist determined Lisa needed shoe changes and corrected a limb length discrepency. Exercises, and drills were prescribed to improve efficiency and prevent/resolve injury.
  • FUEL NUTRITION COUNSELING: Phase IV’s RD worked with Lisa to adjust her nutrition program. While Lisa had been successful with her past diet, we uncovered some issues with the overall health of her diet. This additional knowledge and direction would help guide Lisa to reach her goal of losing her final 30 pounds, and help her maintain her ideal weight.
