
Marc, a 14-year-old high school freshman aspired to make the wrestling team. He was twenty pounds over his predicted weight class, and a diabetic. He let his diabetes limit his activity and had not been very active since the diagnosis. In addition to making the team, Marc’s parents wanted to make sure they all had a much better understanding of nutritional issues to better control his diabetes.
Marc and his father met with the Phase IV Registered Dietitian and a Performance Specialist and reviewed his complete history. It was most urgent that Marc gain immediate control of his weight issues to prevent his diabetes from getting out of control and potentially lead to additional medical issues. He was going to need to become immersed in a full nutrition program and, simultaneously, begin a structured program to greatly improve his general fitness. The Phase IV team designed the following program for Marc:
Marc was able to manage his diabetes, keeping it in check. He lost over fifteen pounds and made his high school and club wrestling teams. Marc’s parents said they saw a tremendous turnaround in his self-confidence and schoolwork as well.
